It is thinly shaved ice from a larger ice cube, similar to fluffy snow, to which syrups and various additives are added. The most classic is shave ice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with condensed milk. The difference between a slushie is that shave ice is thinly shaved ice from a larger ice cube, which allows the syrups to be absorbed instead of sinking to the bottom, while a slushie is crushed ice. That’s why shave ice is served in a pot and eaten with a spoon. 🍧

The original shave ice comes from Japan. To cool down, Japanese immigrants in Hawaii used their tools to scrape ice off large blocks of ice and then coated them with sugar or fruit juice. Today in Hawaii, this is called shave ice.☺️

One of the oldest shave ice shops in Hawaii opened its doors in 1940. ☺️
